The load can fail without a crash
A refrigerated load can be lost without a crash: a unit fails overnight, a load sits at the dock too long, or a shipper rejects it at the receiver. A basic cargo form doesn't cover spoilage from mechanical breakdown, so reefer carriers need it written in.
I check the cargo form for reefer breakdown, the deductible that applies to it, and the commodities it excludes, then match your auto liability and filings to what your brokers require.
- Auto liabilityWith the federal filing for interstate freight.
- Motor truck cargoWith reefer breakdown for spoilage.
- Physical damageTractors and refrigerated trailers.
- Trailer interchangeOther carriers' trailers in your care.
What underwriters will ask
Having these ready means I can go to market on the first call. The quote form asks for the same things, and anything you don’t know yet can wait.
- Authority: USDOT and MC numbers.
- Units: tractors and reefer trailers, with years and values.
- Commodities: your top loads and their highest value.
- Reefer units: make, age and maintenance records.
- Drivers: names, dates of birth, CDL class and records.
- History: five years of loss runs if you have them.
Reefer trucking insurance, answered
What is reefer breakdown coverage?
It pays for cargo that spoils because the refrigeration unit fails. Many cargo forms leave it out or limit it, so I check it on every quote.
Does cargo insurance cover a rejected load?
Only if the policy includes rejected-load coverage. Read the exclusions before you take high-value perishables.
Do brokers require a set cargo limit?
Most do, and some want a higher limit for meat and other high-value loads. Tell me your broker contracts and I'll match them.
Can a new reefer carrier get insured?
Yes, though driver experience and loss history carry more weight. Specialty markets write new ventures.
Do you offer reefer trucking insurance outside California?
Yes. Clients across the country send the same quote form. Sam Alishahi is licensed in all 50 states and Washington, DC and places policies there directly. The shopping across carriers works the same way. Rules, minimums and markets differ by state — see truck insurance by state or insurance requirements by state.
