Method and source
Each row comes from the named regulator's public company list on the date shown, joined by NAIC number. "Admitted" means licensed by the state and backed by its guaranty fund; "surplus lines" means eligible to take risks the admitted market declines, without rate or form approval and, except in New Jersey (which has a separate surplus lines guaranty fund), without guaranty fund protection. Premium and rank come from state market share reports that list every company. This is a public-records directory, not a rating or recommendation; for the company's own filings use the NAIC's Consumer Information Source.

Hard to place? I find who's likely to take it.
Direct General Insurance Company sells its home and auto policies only through its own agents or directly, so I can't quote those. This directory lists every licensed insurer; it doesn't mean I'm appointed with Direct General Insurance Company. To compare other companies, see who's likely to take a risk like yours.
